Tiger Milk Mushrooms: What Are They and What Are Their Benefits?
Aboriginal folklore speaks of a legend whereby a mother lioness dropped milk onto the forest floor causing the growth of an almost magical jungle mushroom. A mushroom that has healing properties.
A Brief History of the Tiger Mushroom
Those who were children in South East Asia during the 1950s and 60s remember a time where their parents would keep dried Tiger’s Milk Mushroom in their homes. Any time anyone in the house had a cough, cold, or fever, their mother would grind down dried mushrooms into a powder and mix it with water. You would drink this mixture and, as if by magic, your cough would be cured!
This is the memory that Dr. Tan Chon Seng was said to have vividly recalled in 2002 when he heard the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamed announced during a keynote address at a Biotechnology Convention that he had finally found the cure to the chronic cough that had plagued him for many years.
Replaced by antibiotics and being incredibly rare, Tiger Milk Mushrooms fell out of favor.
Dr. Tan worked tirelessly for 6 years to cultivate Tiger Milk Mushrooms.
And…He was successful!
This led to commercial cultivating and production on a mass scale.
